The Strathalbyn Library and community centre was designed by Brown Falconer to represent current ‘best practice’ in the design of public libraries and community spaces. The design stressed heritage and environmentally sustainable design principals, with the library providing both traditional and e-library concepts.

The original building was constructed in 1879 and opened in 1880 as a School House. The building and cottage to the rear of the building are both ‘Local Heritage Places’ listed on the Alexandria Council Heritage Register. The new building additions are located between the existing building and the cottage, with significant trees retained and the introduction of mulched landscape areas and water sensitive permeable paving to the reconfigured carpark.

Environmental Sustainability

Vento was approached to provide a solution for natural ventilation. WindowMaster’s NV Comfort™ technology has been linked to all the high level windows. Acting as the building’s BMS, it will activate operable controls to naturally ventilate the internal spaces in periods of fine weather between 20oC and 25oC. Once the temperature goes below/beyond the programmed temperature range, the mechanical ventilation system will be switched on to maintain a comfortable indoor climate. This hybrid solution will assist the building in cutting energy costs associated with ventilation, heating and cooling.

Strathalbyn Library WindowMaster systems

Vento worked closely with Brown Falconer Architects to successfully integrate our WindowMaster NV Comfort automated window natural ventilation system with the heating and cooling systems within the Library to provide a mixed mode ventilation solution for the end user. Harrold and Kite, successfully installed the system.
