Natural Ventilation beats 30 degree heat!

A comfortable indoor climate is achieved by means of Natural Ventilation, also on warm summer days. NCC, one of Denmark’s largest contracting companies, knows this from experience. Last summer the company should stand the test in the summer heat – and the indoor climate controlled by Natural Ventilation came out with flying colours.

Natural Ventilation was one of the requirements made by NCC when the large contracting company built its new headquarters two years ago at Tuborg Harbour – pleasantly situated right on the water. And the company has had no reason to regret it. Particularly not when the warm summer of 2002 was at its highest.

”Practically everybody in the house agrees that Natural Ventilation creates a really good indoor climate. Even on very warm summer days the indoor temperature is comfortable and it gives a fresh feeling that the air is circulated in the building. We experienced this last summer when the outside temperature reached more than 30°C – and all the time it was nice and cool inside,” says Mr. Jørgen Malmstrøm, District Manager, NCC.

Measurements prove the effect
Prior to the building activity, NCC made thorough calculations in cooperation with a number of experts and institutes of education to ensure the best indoor climate in the building. The result is a building characterized by light and air and an indoor climate that is efficiently controlled by means of Natural Ventilation from WindowMaster.

A big atrium in the middle of the building and motorized windows in the facade ensure optimum utilization of the Natural Ventilation. And the employees’ satisfaction with the indoor climate is not without reason, as measurements confirm that the indoor climate is first class. Although the outdoor temperature several times edged up above 30°C during July, there was a constant indoor temperature of 23-25°C. This is possible because the building is cooled at night, so that it is aired and cool, when the employees appear at work in the morning. During the day the building is ventilated as required and in accordance with a number of specified parameters by taking air in automatically through windows in the facade and letting out the warm air through the roof windows. The whole process is controlled by an advanced system from WindowMaster, which according to Mr. Jørgen Malmstrøm functions satisfactorily.

During the workday the employees at NCC can also rejoice at the glass panels in the south and north facade, providing a view over the water and the woods from all workplaces. The view may also be enjoyed from a large terrace overlooking the sea. The sunlight through the roof windows is refracted so that the direct sunlight does not inconvenience the employees. And even if approx. 550 people are working in one office – the building is actually one big open room – the acoustics are good owing to the special wooden floors and wallboards.
